The Manager - Edition 156 - Sometimes people will leave
Sometimes people will leave. And you just gotta let them go.
They say people don’t leave a company; they leave a bad manager. That’s true. But they also leave for several other reasons; pay, location, family commitments, etc
The first reaction I still get when someone leaves is ‘ what did I do wrong?’.
The thing is, if you’re a nice person, you do the techniques I share on my channel and you genuinely care about people, it’s likely not your fault. It’s still my natural response, but I’ve learned to control that and look past it.
Here’s the thing. People will always leave. Your job as a manager is to ensure that when they do leave, they’re one of the best candidates on the market.
They’ve grown, developed, excelled and created value for your business, but also for themselves in the job market. When they leave you’ll know you did your job well and they contributed massively to the business too. They will be taking what you have helped them to develop, somewhere else.
It’s disappointing to lose someone good but it happens, try to ride it out and plan what to do next.
After my initial disappointment I’m thrilled for them. They’ll do great in a new role, and I’ve done my job.
Now if course if someone’s leaving every week..........well, that requires some deep self-reflection and a wider look at the business you’re in. Maybe a topic for a video one day.
Until next week
Rob
