THE MANAGER - BY ROB LAMBERT
Thoughts, links and food for your management brain
Hi,
Hope you are safe and well and all is good with you.
Thought I’d share a little ditty here about management and culture.
I once worked for a giant financial company who were pretending to go agile. I say pretending because they had posters on the wall stating one of their core values was "agility". Yet, they were far from it. In fact, they would never achieve it. No amount of hard work by the talented coaches and consultants would move the needle on this one.
Why?
Because the views, ethics and behaviours of the founders, owners, managers and leaders will always guide the culture and service.
The motto, posters, cultural advertising on the wall will not guide it - the behaviours of all in the company will. And the further up the chain people are, the more influence they typically exert.
Be careful how you choose your companies to work for. Study the behaviours of the leaders and managers - not the values posted on the website or plastered on the walls.
Be careful how you promote and advertise your culture to your staff and new employees. The best companies don't have to advertise their culture - their people are walking, talking role models of it.
But most of all, as a manager, be careful that you’re not asking your team to exhibit behaviours that are not congruent with your own. That’s hypocritical.
