The Manager - Edition 82 - by Rob Lambert
THE MANAGER - EDITION 82
Hi,
Hope you’ve had a cracking weekend and are all set for the week ahead.
This newsletter is changing a little. I’ve been struggling to write new content for this newsletter, and my blog, and all of there avenues my work is published. It resulted in me taking a break from publishing anything at all - which isn’t a practical solution. The overwhelm was real.
So here’s the new publishing schedule which I hope you’ll all enjoy still - and still get epic value from me.
Every Monday I will publish a new article to my blog.
Every Wednesday I will publish the new article to LinkedIn publishing platform (Pulse)
Every Thursday I will publish a new short teaser video on LinkedIn to promote the post - I aim to make these videos more interesting moving forward
Every Friday I will post a short video answering any questions my readers, listeners or audience have.
Every Sunday evening I will post this newsletter.
The newsletter won’t have any original content included like I used to last year. I just can’t keep up the pace.
But it will have links to all of my other content and lots of cool links for you to read - all related to management or the pillars of life I talk about often.
I may mess around with the content a little this year, but my goal is to publish as much useful information, in a sustainable way, this year. I have over 1000 articles in draft from years of not really publishing much to my blog - that’s all getting published in some way, shape or form over the next few years.
I hope you stick with me on the journey and let me know what content you’d like to see more of on the blog.
Have a great week.
Thanks
Rob
FOOD FOR YOUR MANAGEMENT BRAIN
- This week I’ve mostly been thinking about the Principles of Agility. Here’s a video and a blog post.
- In February I am running my first public event of the year - The Communication Super Power workshop in Cardiff. It’s the award winning tutorial from EuroSTAR conference. Tickets and prices here.
- Happens everywhere. Employees have side conversations that never reach management. Why? Well this article suggests it is fear of retribution. Very real indeed. Probably a lot more reasons too - and the solution isn’t as simple as just build Psychological Safety…….that’s hard to build in itself, but it’s also about training, communication, honesty, better goal settings, less focus on profit, customer centric design, yada yada yada.
- Awareness is not the same thing as experience. Don’t be one of those managers who reads a lot, is a aware of a lot, but doesn’t gain the experience of trying and failing and succeeding and learning. Read, but then put it in to practice and form your own wisdom.
- Goldman Sachs now refusing to underwrite public offerings for company with a board with zero diversity. You can see what’s going to happen now….
- Interesting article on using formal rules to stop people checking work emails out of hours. Probably requires some experimentation to get this right, but nice ideas.
- Facial recognition apps are on the rise. How will this affect your work or world?
- There’s a lot to like in this article from Basecamp about company communication. There’s a lot to challenge too. Writing rather face to face discussion….sometimes, but let’s not pretend that relationships can be formed via written words alone. The best way to build relationships is with one person at a time - face to face. We get so much more from reading body language and looking someone in the eyes. Still - some very useful hints and tips indeed.
- Lots of reasons on here why burnout happens. Resonate with many of them.
- If you use a work issued computer - be careful. Here’s a thoughtful article on how to be careful as an employee using a work issued computer.
