The Manager - Edition 81 - Happy New Year - by Rob Lambert
THE MANAGER - BY ROB LAMBERT
WELCOME
Hi,
I hope you had a great holiday season and are all set for the new year.
Sorry for the radio silence here on The Manager. I needed some time out over the holiday season to spend time with my family, plan world domination and put together a plan for this year.
The Manager is back. So am I.
Communication Workshop
In February I will be running my first public workshop for 2020. It's the Communication Super Power workshop. It's the award winning workshop where I help you develop great communication skills to take your career to the next level, deal with conflict, develop self-confidence and learn some underlying science of effective communication. Tickets are limited - prices and details are here.
LinkedIn Versus Twitter
I’m spending a lot less time on Twitter. And a lot more time on LinkedIn. I’m using LinkedIn as my platform of choice for sharing new content. Please feel free to follow me on there - https://www.linkedin.com/in/robertlambert/
Enjoy this week's newsletter.

10 Behaviours and Conference Talk Submissions
Getting a conference talk accepted
Over the last couple of weeks I've shared some videos on LinkedIn about how to get a conference talk accepted, as well as added my guide over there too. If you're thinking of speaking at a conference - and I always advocate a massive YES to doing that - then these guides will be helpful for you.
The long form post on How To Get Your Conference Talk Accepted is here. For those who like a good long read.
In Video 1, from the cover of my car (it's cold and stormy in the UK), I cover:
Why would you speak at a conference?
Where to find conferences
Making sense of the conference themes
General ramble chat about stuff including deers and the state of conference submissions.
In Video 2, I avoid dog walkers, nearly fall over and share insights on:
The finer details and following instructions
Creating a personable bio
Nailing the title and working on the key take-aways
Getting a good profile photo
In Video 3 I muse about the weather, forget what video I’m doing and share insights on:
Why people would like to see your talk
What is the purpose of the talk and who are you trying to reach?
The power of an experience report and the risk of a theory talk
Pugilists
How to generate ideas (more in the associated blog post)
The irony of me suggesting you ignore the “influencers”
In Video 4, I talk about big dogs, bellies and how to:
Deal with nerves
Prepare the talk
Deliver the talk
Deal with questions
Walk through the talk
Practice
The 10 Behaviours Of Effective Employees
I've refreshed the 10 Behaviours topic and posted a longer form post here on LinkedIn.
And here's a fun little video introducing the topic.
And of course, grab the free eBook where I go into much more detail.
FOOD FOR YOUR MANAGEMENT BRAIN
1 - Trust me, time doesn't respond well to being managed. But I wish I had more of it. Here are some ideas on why we don't have time.
2 - Ever been asked to communicate on the spot? Impromptu stylie? Here's how to deal with it.
3 - I'm still writing a book about squirrels. So I saw this list of squirrel facts and thought I'd share it - it has nothing to do with management (well, that is until my book comes out :) ).
4 - Ambitious - Microsoft is aiming to reduce its carbon footprint, not from now moving forward - but from FOREVER. Leadership in a time of growing concern over the environment.
5 - How to stop thinking about work at 3am. Could do with following this advice more.
6 - Some ideas to give thanks to your team. From Trello.
7 - 5G, Huawei and the regulation. Will the Chinese company be allowed to build backbone for platform.
8 - This article amazed me. How to get better at searching Google. It amazed me that people couldn't find what they were looking for on Google with a straight forward search.... Maybe searching for cute kitten memes isn't stretching Google enough.
