If you find yourself using phrases like "It's industry standard" and "it's normal in our industry" or "everyone else gets the same result" then please stop.
If you compare yourself to the industry standard or what is normal in your industry you'll be standard and normal. And it's pretty tough to stand out for the right reasons when you're standard and normal. Don't be standard and normal. Don't settle for average.
Becoming a manager that's in demand requires you to buck what is standard and normal and aim for exceptional.
Head for excellence. Set your eyes on outstanding. Be remarkable.
When you're setting goals it can be tempting to set tiny increments or to set goals that are normal and standard. Don't do it. Break past it. Set something outlandish and exceptional. You might never get there, but at least you'll find motivation in trying. At least you'll surpass what is normal and standard. Trust me, normal and standard should be for everyone else. Exceptional should be your calling card.
Normal should be unacceptable.
